Nissan hints at a body-on-frame comeback for Pathfinder

Pathfinder might get rugged again

Nissan is thinking about bringing the Pathfinder back to its off-road roots. According to The Drive, Michael Soutter, a Nissan executive, said that a truck-based Pathfinder would be “logical” as part of a new family of body-on-frame SUVs.

The Pathfinder name is intended to represent capability, not just family tradition. Soutter said the idea is alive and that the SUV could join the revived Xterra and Frontier in future U.S. lineups.

Xterra revival leads the way

Nissan recently confirmed the return of the Xterra as a body-on-frame SUV. The Xterra could arrive around 2028 and serve as a starting point for Nissan’s rugged SUV family.

The plan is to make the Xterra an aspirational off-roader. Soutter explained that the model should start at under $40,000, providing adventure seekers with a relatively affordable entry into a capable off-road vehicle.

Pathfinder’s truck DNA

The original Pathfinder launched in 1985 on the Hardbody pickup platform. It was unapologetically truck-like, built for drivers who needed ground clearance and a strong frame for trails or rough terrain.

It stayed body-on-frame through the first three generations. That formula gave the Pathfinder serious off-road credibility compared to other SUVs at the time, making it a favorite among enthusiasts who valued capability over comfort.

Shift to family-friendly SUV

For the 1996 model year, Pathfinder moved to a unibody chassis. This change was made to appeal more to families rather than off-road adventurers who wanted a rugged SUV.

The fourth-generation model and today’s 2026 refresh focus on comfort, tech, and a cleaner exterior. These updates make the SUV more polished and easier to drive daily, while retaining some practical capabilities.

Pathfinder still retains some toughness

Even after switching to unibody, Pathfinder kept some off-road features. It retained a solid rear axle and available 4WD systems (including part-time setups on many models), preserving light-trail capability.

This balance helped drivers who needed both family comfort and the ability to tackle rough roads occasionally. It allowed Pathfinder to remain versatile without fully abandoning its original rugged roots.

Future depends on production

Nissan is considering U.S. production for body-on-frame models in Mississippi or Tennessee. This step is crucial for scaling a rugged SUV family that could include the Pathfinder.

Once assembly is established, the company can evaluate plant capacity and tooling. Soutter says only after these factors are clear will Nissan decide how far to expand its body-on-frame SUV lineup.

Pathfinder as an aspirational SUV

Soutter described the Pathfinder as an aspirational vehicle. The Drive reports he recalls driving a first-gen Pathfinder in winter in Ontario, which convinced him of its off-road magic and long-lasting appeal.

The SUV has always been more than a practical family car. Nostalgia and its capability could help drive interest if Nissan brings back a rugged body-on-frame version.

Not a response to trends

Nissan’s move isn’t just a copy of competitors. The Xterra revival isn’t a reaction to trims like Honda Passport Trailsport or Ford Explorer Timberline.

The focus is on building a proper off-road SUV family. Pathfinder could eventually fit into this lineup if production goes well and there’s demand for true rugged SUVs

Pathfinder generations explained

Gen 1 was BOF, Gen 2 switched to unibody (1996 MY), Gen 3 returned to BOF (2005 MY), and since 2013, it has been a unibody family crossover.

The SUV evolved from trail-ready to family-focused. Each generation showcases Nissan’s efforts to balance off-road capability with modern technology and comfort for everyday drivers.

Xterra as Pathfinder’s sibling

Soutter says the Xterra is the first step toward a family of rugged SUVs. The Pathfinder could eventually join this group as a true body-on-frame model.

Starting with Xterra lets Nissan test production, gauge market interest, and work out logistics before committing to Pathfinder. This approach reduces risk while planning a long-term rugged SUV lineup.

Timing remains uncertain

Nissan hasn’t set a timeline for a Pathfinder return. The plan depends on U.S. assembly and how well the body-on-frame lineup scales with the Xterra and Frontier.

The SUV could appear once production is established. According to AutoBlog, Soutter described this as a long-term roadmap rather than a quick launch, signaling patience and careful planning.

Pathfinder versus competitors

When it was truck-based, Pathfinder competed directly with the Toyota 4Runner. It offered off-road capability and Nissan-specific design features that made it a strong choice in its segment.

A new body-on-frame Pathfinder could reclaim this market. Fans of rugged SUVs might finally see a proper alternative from Nissan that blends nostalgia with modern features.

Cost-cutting plans at Nissan begin to show real progress. This shift indicates the extent to which the restructuring is impacting the company’s long-term strategy.
