Genesis brand reliability ranking data

The Genesis luxury brand placed 14th out of 22 automakers evaluated in the Consumer Reports 2025 reliability survey, putting it roughly in the middle of the pack. This positioning represented an improvement over the prior year’s ranking, where the brand had finished in 18th position in the CR 2024 reliability rankings.

The full 2025 reliability results were released to the public in late 2025. The survey data confirms that while Genesis offers a range of high-end luxury vehicles, its consistency in build quality and longevity remains modest compared to other top-rated brands.

Genesis G70 sedan receives exceptionally low score

Building on the brand’s overall ranking, the Genesis G70 sports sedan received an exceptionally low score in the CR 2025 reliability report, earning just 29 points out of a possible 100. This places the G70 among the least dependable new cars tested in the 2025 study, according to the consumer group.

The low score reflects a history of issues, including a fire-risk recall related to water intrusion into the starter solenoid, as well as a mix of other electrical and mechanical complaints. The G70 was the brand’s entry-level model upon its debut in 2018, attracting praise for its styling.

Despite some reliability issues, the Genesis G80 midsize sedan has received high acclaim from other agencies, with the 2025 G80 model securing an 88/100 score for Quality and Reliability from J.D. Power.

However, specific model years were affected by a critical safety recall, NHTSA 24V-107, announced on Feb. 13, 2024. This recall included the 2017-2019 G80 vehicles. The issue involved the starter solenoid becoming contaminated with water, potentially causing an electrical short and fire risk while the car is parked.

GV70 SUV’s low reliability score and transmission recall

The problems extended to the SUV line, where the Genesis GV70 compact SUV finished with a below-average score in the latest CR assessment. The 2024 GV70 was also included in a recall, NHTSA 24V-205, due to an issue with the transmission control harness connector.

This connector fault could cause the vehicle to unexpectedly shift from Park to Neutral. Owner notification letters for this repair were scheduled to be mailed on May 14, 2024, instructing owners to bring their vehicles to the dealership for a complimentary repair.

Wide recall for failed instrument panel displays

Another electrical issue that affected many Genesis vehicles was the safety recall, NHTSA 25V-105, issued on Feb. 18, 2025, for a software error that could cause the instrument panel display to stop showing key information. This recall affected an estimated 32,594 Genesis vehicles, including 2023–2024 G80 and GV80 models as well as certain 2025 GV70 and 2023–2025 Electrified GV70 vehicles.

The display malfunction violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 101 by obscuring critical information, such as the speedometer. Owner notification letters for the software update were scheduled to be sent by April 20, 2025.

Electric model power loss from charging unit fault

The electric vehicle models were not immune to issues, as a major recall, NHTSA 24V-868, was announced in November 2024 regarding the Integrated Charging Control Unit. The issue involved a damaged unit that can prevent charging the 12-volt battery, potentially leading to a complete loss of drive power.

Affected Genesis models include the 2023–2025 GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80. Owner notification letters regarding the ICCU replacement and software update are expected to be mailed in January 2025.

How long the G90 is expected to last

In contrast to the recall issues, the G90 is the biggest and most luxurious sedan made by Genesis. Owners expect this car to last for a very long time, often reaching between 200,000 and 300,000 miles if it is properly maintained and serviced.

The company helps owners by offering an industry-leading 10-year or 100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, one of the most competitive coverages in the luxury segment. Also, a complimentary scheduled maintenance package covers services for up to 36 months or 36,000 miles for new G90 models.

How Genesis owners can stay ahead of new safety recalls

Genesis owners worried about reliability can take a more proactive approach to safety and maintenance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) allows drivers to search their vehicle’s VIN online to view any open recalls and track repair campaigns as they’re announced.

Genesis also offers its own recall and service lookup tools through dealer websites and the MyGenesis app, helping owners schedule free repairs quickly. Staying on top of software updates and recall notices is one of the simplest ways to protect both long-term reliability and the resale value of your vehicle.

Another mechanical issue targeted specific models when a separate recall, NHTSA 24V-282, was issued due to a defect in the low-pressure fuel pump assembly. The issue involves the impeller inside the pump deforming under high heat, which can prevent the fuel pump from functioning correctly.

This expanded recall affected a total of 31,440 potential units, covering 2022-2023 model year G80, G90, GV70, and GV80 vehicles. Owner notification letters for this repair were scheduled to be mailed starting June 7, 2024, instructing owners to have the fuel pump assembly replaced.

Performance facts of the GV60 electric

Despite the safety recalls, Genesis is moving forward with high-performance electric vehicles, such as the GV60, which is built on an 800-volt architecture. The standard rear-wheel drive powertrain is capable of providing the car with an EPA-estimated 294 miles of driving range on a full battery.

The more powerful Performance AWD model is rated at up to about 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. When using a DC Ultra-Fast Charger, the GV60 can recharge its battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

Fire risk leads to ‘park outside’ warning

The most critical safety warning involved the risk of fire. Hyundai and Kia issued a mass “park outside” safety warning for over 3.3 million vehicles due to a leak in the anti-lock brake system module, which can cause an electrical short.

Approximately 1.64 million select Hyundai and Genesis vehicles were included in the warning. The safety recall, NHTSA 23V-651, was announced on Sept. 27, 2023, with the company confirming 21 related vehicle fires in the U.S. known at that time.

Magma performance line is unveiled

Finally, Genesis is focusing on performance with the launch of its high-performance Magma sub-brand, starting with the GV60 Magma as its first production model. The GV60 Magma uses a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system that delivers roughly 640 horsepower when its Boost Mode is activated.

This power helps the car accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in an estimated 3.4 seconds. The vehicle also uses an 84-kWh battery pack and was unveiled at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, France, on Nov. 20, 2025.
