The BYD Seagull is poised to be one of the most affordable all-electric cars, with a starting price of under $10,000. Few vehicles fall into this price range, making it a standout option.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are often associated with high price tags, which raises an important question: What’s the benefit of saving on fuel costs if the upfront cost of the car is prohibitively expensive?

First Look

The windshield features a single wiper blade for a minimalist look. The door handles are semi-concealed, adding a sleek touch, and the car is equipped with a prominent rear spoiler.

At the rear, a new logo spells out “Build Your Dreams,” the full name of BYD. Overall, the body design is appealing, with alloy wheels and a sporty side profile that enhances its visual appeal. 

Dimensions

The BYD Seagull could be an excellent choice for navigating heavy traffic. This four-seater hatchback offers an advantage over other EVs limited to just two seats.

The Seagull measures 3,780 mm (149 inches) in length and 1,715 mm (67.5 inches) in width. Its height of 1,540 mm (60.6 inches) ensures adequate headroom, while the 2,500 mm (98.4 inches) wheelbase provides a balanced and comfortable ride.

The Interior

The interior of the Seagull is simple yet minimalist, resembling a smaller version of the BYD Dolphin. The design incorporates a mix of cloth, plastic, and leather, creating a balanced and functional aesthetic.

The gear selector is mounted as a small knob on the dashboard for easy access. The steering wheel offers four-way adjustment, while the 10.1-inch center screen provides versatility with its ability to rotate between portrait and landscape orientations.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system in the Seagull follows the standard offered across the BYD lineup. However, instead of the larger 15.6-inch screen found in higher-end models, it features a 10.1-inch display that consolidates all essential functions in one place, making it the focal point of the interior.

The rotating screen enhances versatility, allowing for portrait orientation for navigation and landscape mode for an immersive media experience. This feature has become a signature element across nearly all BYD models.

Seats

The seating positions for all four seats are surprisingly comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and legroom. The driver’s seat is upholstered in leather and provides a cozy feel.

The rear seats have adequate space to accommodate two adults comfortably. However, the Seagull feels smaller and less upscale than the BYD Dolphin. However, it does offer a wireless charging pad.

Battery Range

The BYD Seagull comes with two battery options, offering different ranges. One variant provides a range of 190 miles, while the more significant battery option extends that to 250 miles.

While these figures may not be imposing, the Seagull’s status as one of the most affordable EVs on the market more than compensates for this limitation.

Performance

The all-electric motor delivers around 75 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque. With a total power output of 55 kW, these modest figures add up to a top speed of 80 mph—yes, you read that right.

Interestingly, instead of sharing the typical 0-60 mph time, BYD highlights the Seagull’s 0-30 mph acceleration, which takes 4.9 seconds. For a full 0-60 mph sprint, the car requires 13 seconds.

Utility Car

In most countries, the speed limit is around 75 mph, making the Seagull’s top speed well-suited for casual cruising.

The Seagull is an excellent option for practical, everyday use, such as school drop-offs and pick-ups. It also works well as a commuter car for office-goers, especially in areas with limited parking space.

Maintenance

BYD claims the Seagull offers up to 70% savings compared to traditional gas-powered cars. Despite its compact battery, it is said to be highly efficient.

The company also states that the Seagull requires just one annual maintenance check. Additionally, it supports both AC and DC charging options for added convenience.

Adaptive Cruise Control

The Seagull is undoubtedly an entry-level car in the EV lineup, and expectations should align with its budget-friendly nature.

Despite its affordability, driving the Seagull can be enjoyable thanks to features like adaptive cruise control. Its modest 190-mile range is well-suited for peaceful city drives, daily commutes, and chores.

Safety

It’s surprising to see what the Seagull offers in terms of safety. The car has a complete four-airbag system, which seems adequate for its class.

This setup includes airbags in the steering wheel, dashboard, pillars, and seats. Such safety features are reassuring for a compact commuter car and reflect a commitment to passenger protection.

Blade Battery

BYD refers to its innovative battery design as the Blade Battery, which utilizes a cell-to-pack structure. This concept has been discussed in the EV industry for some time, but BYD has now brought it to market.

Traditional EV batteries group individual cells into modules and assemble them into a pack. BYD’s approach eliminates the need for intermediate modules, placing the cells directly into the main casing. This streamlined design improves efficiency and optimizes space utilization.

Highly Demanding

Considering various factors, a question arises: Will this tiny EV be a hit or a flop? This provides an answer to the practicality of Seagull.

Surprisingly, in 2023, the Seagull proved to be a success, selling over 280,217 units in China and becoming one of BYD’s top-selling models. Internationally, the Seagull is also marketed as the Dolphin Mini.

NFC and Bluetooth Entry

The BYD Seagull provides high-tech convenience with NFC keyless entry, making access effortless. This feature lets you unlock the car using a card or an iPhone.

Additionally, the Seagull offers remote climate control, enabling you to adjust the vehicle’s temperature—hot or cold—from a distance. You can set the desired temperature with remote air conditioning before stepping inside for maximum comfort.

Lamborghini-mini

The Seagull is available in three colors: Sprout Green, Delan Black, and Apricity White. Surprisingly, the Sprout Green color combined with the front headlights resembles the Lamborghini Huracán.

The reason for this design similarity became apparent when I discovered that Wolfgang Egger, a former Lamborghini designer, was behind the Seagull’s design. This connection has earned it the nickname “Lamborghini Mini.”
